Cycling is an affordable, efficient, and environmentally-friendly way for many people to travel to work and school. Unfortunately, cyclists are at an increased risk of severe injury compared to other commuters. Consider a few things you can do to avoid accidents and keep yourself safe while you ride.

  1. Monitor Your Surroundings

First, it’s critical that you keep tabs on all the vehicles around you; don’t assume that drivers will see you. Before turning onto a major roadway, be sure to consistently look in both directions. When vehicles are moving at high speeds, wait for an opening large enough to give you a chance to build up your speed before the next car comes along.   1. Wear Protective Gear

Having the proper clothing and equipment is also critical. Helmets, of course, are a tried and true method of preventing head injuries. Be sure to wear close-toed shoes and fitted pants, as well. At night, it’s smart to wear reflective gear. Some illuminated devices and reflective strips are designed to attach directly to your bike or helmet, for instance. You could also attach reflective strips to your backpack or jacket for good measure.

Finally, remember that traffic laws still apply to cyclists. You must stop at stop signs and red lights, for example. Additionally, it is best to ride in the same direction as the regular flow of traffic.
